Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilover the counterwithout a prescription.
The application is forsildenafil 50mg onlyin a maximum pack size of 8 tablets. Sildenafil tablets are available on prescription in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg in pack sizes of four and eight tablets.
The move follows the in 2013. After the patent expired other pharmaceutical companies, apart from Pfizer, have been permitted to supply their own sildenafil tablets, sometimes known as generic Viagra.
The application has support from the pharmacy industry: “Sildenafil is one of the most counterfeited medications,” said Royal Pharmaceutical Society president Martin Astbury, with many men “saying they will get a refill” if they have experienced blue or green pills seized by the Government’s Prescription Counterfeit Drug programme.
A statement from Pfizer explained: “Pfizer’s reclassification would allow pharmacies to sell Sildenafil without a prescription.” Sildenafil tablets are usually available in four strengths (25mg, 50mg, 50mg), but “eight tablets” are standard in the pharmacy industry.

“Pfizer has also supplied information about products that are amenable of the NHS to follow suit, including tablets in strengths (25mg, 50mg) and children (1 – 10). These products are also supplied on a doctor’s list with packaging and labeling that lists strengths and quantities. The NHS list explicitly recognise 50mg as a strength.”
